Schwarzer geglätteter Maroquinband (um 1880) auf fünf Bünden mit reicher Rücken- und Deckelvergoldung, vergoldeten Stehkanten und breiten Innendeckelbordüren (signiert: P. Ruban) und Ganzgoldschnitt (vereinzelt leichte Bereibungen, untere Ecken mit leichter Druckspur).

XL. – Bemerkenswertes Exemplar eines Buches, von dem Bibliographen sagen, dass nicht zwei Exemplare identisch sind. – “The variations in this perplexing volume are too complicated to permit of formal analysis or a complete record of the copies in which they occur.” (G.B. Evans). – Unser Exemplar hat die von der Zensur beanstandeten Bl. U bis U3 (S. 301/2 “On the Queen’s return …” und S. 305 “Upon the death …”) sowohl in der ursprünglichen wie auch in der zensierten Fassung (der Buchbinder hat die Bl. in sich verbunden), darüber hinaus die S. 301-306 noch einmal mit “On the Death of the most vertuous Gentlewoman …” – William Cartwright, (1611- 1643), “the most noted poet, orator and philosopher of his time” (Goffin S. XI) “one of the best known Oxford poets and dramatists of his time. His greatest triumph was the tragicomedy ‘The Royal Slave’, which was produced at Christ Church, with sets and costumes by Inigo Jones and music by Henry Lawes, before Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria on 30 August 1636 … (His) considerable corpus of verse, which included a variety of occasional poems, royal or personal panegyrics, religious and commendatory poems, was not established until the posthumous publication, by Humphrey Mosely, of Cartwright’s Comedies Tragi-Comedies, With other Poems (London, 1651), a publication which is marked not least by the extraordinary number of prefatory commendatory poems, which serve not only to honour Cartwright but to define the community of like-minded royalist poets and composers flourishing in London in the Interregnum.” (P.Beale). – Gestochenes Exlibris (E.D. French sc. 1894) Charles B. Foote auf dem Innendeckel. Foote (1837-1900), Banker und Buch-Sammler, Gründungsmitglied (ebenso E.D. French) des 1884 gegründeten Grolier Club.
