Seltene Gaper Apothekenbüste

Seltene Gaper Apothekenbüste. Niederlande, 19./20. Jahrhundert, Büste eines älteren Mannes mit leidendem Gesichtsausdruck und offenem Mund mit einer Tablette auf der Zunge, Gips, lose auf schwarzem Holzpodest. Maße: ca. 46 x 39 x 20 cm.
Sehr seltene Büste eines holländischen Gapers, sie dienten seit dem späten 16. Jahrhundert bis zum Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts als Aushängeschild vor den Schaufenstern oder an den Fassaden von Drogerien und Apotheken. Der offene Mund, ein krankes schmerzverzerrtes Gesicht und eine Tablette auf der Zunge sollten die Einnahme von Tabletten im Krankheitsfall bewerben.

A rare sickly soul Gaper. Netherlands 19th/20th century, plaster, loose on ebonized wooden base. Dimensions c. 46 x 39 x 20 cm. – Gapers or Yawners first appeared on the streets of Holland and Flanders around the sixteenth century to advertise druggists and pharmacists. The oldest surviving Gapers are from the eighteenth century, all are unique but have comon characteristics. They all have big heads, mouth agape and are exotic and fascinating in their appearance, depicting Moors, court jesters, sickly souls and later men in uniform. The grotesque sticking out oft the tongue and pained expression may relate tot he revolting taste of some medicine. It may be symbolic of the tongue’s use in diagnosis and taking medicine.
